Hello - I'm Michele Broadbent owner and founder of Sign & Rhyme.
I first fell in love with British Sign Language (BSL) some 15 years ago, when I went along to my local collage and enrolled on a course. It has since become a way of life for me and my whole family, and I have worked for a number of years, both teaching & supporting Deaf and hard of hearing students in further and higher education. My husband works as a freelance BSL interpreter, my oldest daughter Florence, takes great delight in teaching all her friends the beauty of sign and my youngest daughter Ruby, communicates from morning until night, using sign.
Learning BSL has enabled me to form lots of life long friendships with people in the Deaf community and it was here that I first witnessed a hearing baby signing with her Deaf parents. On witnessing this phenomenon, I made a promise to myself, that should I ever get round to having babies, that I would sign with them. Some years on, I now have two wonderful daughters that have shown me just how truly amazing it is to be able to communicate with ones pre-verbal baby.
These early years experiences and my friends in the Deaf community are what prompted me to set up my company and I have been delivering Baby Signing workshops and classes around the world for a number of years. Through my travels, I have come across lots of other like minded people that are interested in teaching others about the benefits of signing with babies and who want to share the beauty of the language of Sign. You will find them all, on this website.
When you attend any of our Sign & Rhyme classes you can be sure of being taught by a qualified signer, whose first interest was that of learning sign to communicate with the Deaf community. All our classes welcome babies, parents and early years professionals both hearing and deaf. We invite you to experience the joy of learning how to sign, within a fun and nurturing environment of a Sign & Rhyme class.
There are many, benefits to signing with our babies and young children and I hope you will enrol on a class near you to find out more. All our classes teach British Sign Language, the recognised language of our Deaf community. So here in the UK you can be sure of learning the first and preferred language of around 70,000 people. We have the Deaf community to thank for this beautiful language. I am sure you will find great joy in learning it yourselves and teaching it to your babies and children.
